Dorothy Collins receives a proclamation from Mayor Harriet Rosenthal making 24 October World Polio Day in Deerfield.
At the 15 October Deerfield Village Board meeting, Club President Dorothy Collins accepted a village proclamation by Mayor Harriet Rosenthal making 24 October World Polio Day in Deerfield. Since 1985, Rotary has been fighting to eradicate polio, with its Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners. Thanks largely to Rotarians, we are 99 percent of the way there. But the last one percent is extremely important. Only three countries remain polio endemic, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria. Just this year, India dropped from the list. To date, Rotary has contributed more than US$1 billion to this effort. Thousands of Rotarians, including many from Northern Illinois, have traveled to countries where polio is endemic during National Immunization Days to immunize children.
